33rd Long Course Championships
held at the Joan Harrison Swimming Pool
Complex in East London
in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in the
Eastern Cape Province
from the 15th to the 18th of March 2017.
The SAMS Open Water Championships were held
at
Wriggleswade Dam near Stutterheim 75km inland from East london on the 19th.
2476 entries for individual events were received from 494 swimmers (255 women and 239 men) from 26 clubs.
4 were from foreign swimmers from Great Britain, Botswana & Namibia.
461 swimmers eventually competed.
438 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.
15 swimmers won all 6 of their individual events.
434 relay teams were entered.
There were 163 swimmers entered who were
60 years and older.
58 of them were 70 years and
older.
19 of them were 80 years and
older.
1 was 90 years and older.
The oldest female competing was
Kascha Kloos (92) from Cape Town MSC.
The oldest male competing was Ted Beukes (87) from
Coelacanth MSC.
In the Open Water events 216 swimmers entered and 135 swimmers competed.

No FINA World Masters Swimming Records were broken.
SAMS Records
Individual
38 South African
Masters Swimming Records were broken or established by 15 different swimmers from
6 different
clubs.
Plus 1 second place finisher also bettered the previous
SAMS Record.
Tim Shead (Cape Town MSC)
broke SAMS
Records in all 6 of his individual events plus another in a relay
leadoff leg.
Relays

Masters Swimming Records were broken or established by
4 different Clubs.

also bettered the previous SAMS Record.
COLOURS
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 80 times by 24 different South African Swimmers during the championships.
Di Coetzee, Sanderina Kruger & Tim Shead bettered the SAMS Colours qualifying time in all 6 of their individual events.29 swimmers (21 women & 8 men) who qualified throughout the 2016/2017 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
In addition there was 1 swimmer who qualified on time in the 2016/2017 season but has yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 SAMS National Long Course Championships.
There were also 3 swimmers who had qualified in previous seasons and had now competed in their 3rd SAMS LC Nationals. They were awarded these SAMS Colours.
