34th Long Course Championships
held at the Hillcrest Swimming Pool
in Pretoria
in the Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in the
Gauteng Province
from the 14th to the 17th of March 2018.
The SAMS Open Water Championships were held
on the Ebotse (CR Swart) Dam in Rynfield, Benoni on the 18th.
Results
2329 entries for individual events were received from 477 swimmers (250 women and 227 men) from 27 clubs.
8 swimmers were from foreign countries - Great Britain (4), Poland (2), Botswana (1) & Namibia (1).
443 swimmers eventually competed.
422 swimmers scored points for their club in individual races.
9 swimmers won all 6 of their individual events.
325 relay teams were entered.
There were 171 swimmers entered who were
60 years and older.
72 of them were 70 years and
older.
21 of them were 80 years and
older.
The oldest female competing was
Jane Asher (87) from Kings Cormorants SC (GBR).
The oldest male competing was Don Johnston (89) from
Phoenix MSC.
In the Open Water events 190 swimmers entered and 109 swimmers competed.

Masters Swimming Records were broken by the Women 240-279 Cape
Town MSC team consisting of
Di Coetzee, Sanderina Kruger, Edith
Ottermann & Cecilia Stanford.
SAMS Records:
Individual:
15 South African
Masters Swimming Records were broken or established by
9 different swimmers from
7 different
clubs.
Plus 1 second place finisher also bettered the previous
SAMS Record.
Relays:
15 South African
Masters Swimming Records were broken or established by
5 different Clubs.
Plus
3 (a 2nd, a 3rd and a 4th place) finishing teams
also bettered the previous SAMS Record.
COLOURS
POOL:
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered 63 times by 21 SAMS Swimmers (14 women & 7 men) during the championships.
26 swimmers (15 women & 9 men) who qualified throughout the 2017/2018 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
In addition there were 2 swimmers who qualified on time in the 2017/2018 season but have yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 SAMS National Long Course Championships.
OPEN WATER:
South African Masters Swimming Colours qualifying times were bettered by 2 SAMS Swimmers at the Open Water event.
10 swimmers (9 women & 1 man) who qualified throughout the 2017/2018 season were awarded their SAMS Colours.
In addition there was 1 swimmer who qualified on time in the 2017/2018 season but has yet to fulfil the requirement of participation in 3 SAMS National Long Course Championships.
